Ng Chee Bai

hehe... lets face it... whats the easiest way to learn foreign language, or what would be the first words you pick up from a foreign language. Let me tell you a story, on how i actually picked up my Cantonese.

Coming from a English speaking family and basically spent my early days in Penang, I only spoke English and a bit of Hokkien when i enrolled in primary school. When i moved to my second school (La Salle Jln Peel), i spoke zero Cantonese.

This La Salle or i should say school formally known as La Salle (now its just some Malay name- some ass wipe just came up with the idea of changing all the English and Chinese names for school and roads to Malay names- i bet everyone remembered it), and its in the midst of this Chinese and Malay mixed "kampung" style area just at the frindge of the city. Most of the students there can't speak English / Hokkien and most of them spoke Cantonese (Chinese school boys that is).

There was this boy named Ng Chee Wai (some how you'll always remember the names of those guys that had "interesting" names), and most of the boys in the class used to call him Ng Chee Bai when calling his name or handing out his homework (when the teacher is not in of course). Well.... being the ignorant lil' boy, i soon followed. So this is where it got really interesting... one day when our class teacher handed our homeworks back to us, i happen to have Mr. Ng's book with me, and guess what? I shouted on top of my lil' lungs, NG CHEE BAI!!! and the whole class started laughing and the teacher totally stunned beyond her wits, and soon recovered to ask me to stand in front of the class and asked my what i said.. so i repeated straight to her face NG CHEE BAI!

ahaha... i could still remember her stunned face as she sent me off to the principle! Back then, not being exposed to such words, i repeated the same phrase to the head master when he asked me what i said, and i basically got sent home. i believed my parents soon got a call from the principle to "settle" the "problem".

So after the big jim bang and being driven back home by my dad, he asked me again... what did i say in the class and why i did it... so naturally, still unaware what was going on i muttered Ng Chee Bai and my dad just went blank! After the father and son talk, then only i realised that the fascinating word that i was using was a curse word. Over the years we as children would naturally pick up all the "interesting" words that would come along and become a "specialist" in utilising them.

Nibble nibble, taut taut, STRIKE! Fish On!!!
