The one that broke the Jinx

Every now and then we fisho’s have always blamed luck when ever we never catch any fish. We have also blamed it on the countless jinx that we ever had. So, little story was about how my dad was jinx / cursed by a so called monk on fishing (MAN!!! Imagine! Cursed not to be able to catch any fish!!)

Trip was planned for Kuching fishing trip from 20-May till 22-May-05 on board Ho Chua 1 (Good Snake 1) with 7 anglers involved in this trip. Ship was well prepared for anglers with enough bunking areas and not forgetting baits (sotong – boxes of it)!

Dad has not been catching anything for the pass 4 fishing trips, I think it would date back to about more than 5 years? This was after my dad was given a “lecture” by a monk not to fish anymore cause it is cruel to do it (Karma?) – man, try to imagine… not catch for so long… I think most of us would have given up by then right?

Well, here we were on Ho Chua 1 going out to sea with great expectation (here we go again with the guide telling us about going home with too much fish to carry home stories). All I can say I really missed this type of fishing, out on the sea with the salt tasting wind blowing in your face and great view on board. Everyone busy setting up their gears having great expectation for this trip, plus the photo’s the guide showed us before we boarded the ship helped to fire up our “thirst for blood”. The warriors of the sea are locked and loaded for action…

Ship has just arrived at the fishing spot and lines were down. Action was quite ok, but not until the way the guide told us (no surprise there I guess), or maybe cause we were all doing bottom fishing and not jigging (didn’t have any metal jigs that time). Then a loud screeching sound from a reel, and to my surprise from my dad’s reel and the fight was really hard and furious (I kid you not) – even had problems trying to put on the fighting belt for my dad.

After I guess 15 to 20 minutes of fight a beautiful 6.2Kg Red Snapper with eyes bulging out from its socket was landed (the biggest Red landed during that trip). From then on the jinx was ended, and somehow I still haven’t manage to out fish my dad yet (hmmm… wondering… the curse has jump to the next generation?... well as Arnold says it.. “I’ll Be Back!”).

Night fishing wasn't bad, with loads of action with the biggest catch of the trip being a 15kg ray. Oh how my hand itch now for the next trip to East Malaysia this coming end of June. Recently some fisho's just came back from their first trip and the news has been very encouraging :)

Nibble nibble, taut taut, STRIKE! Fish ON!!!
