Now I have done many training and march pass commanding, but never a proper speech in front of a crowd. Haven’t been really planning to prepare any speeches as I already knew what I would be saying. I’m really glad that I’ve listen to my mom and then wife-to-be…else I would be lost for words once I’ve started my speech….
Let me tell you, it ain’t that easy to put all what you’re trying to say into words… and it took me 3 whole hours making sure that it wasn’t too long / boring and at the same time would keep people interested in this speech…
So here was how I wrote this up (I hope this would help those who will be getting wed soon :) )
First off – I tried starting the speech like how our school teacher tried so hard to “teach” us, but like any defiant student, all I cared was messing about in school – lucky I watch a lot of TV! Ahaha.. see? TV helps!!! :P
The structure of the speech was roughly written out like this:
1) So the usual thank you and best wishes to all those who have attended lo… (coincidentally the FA Cup final was on the same night- I figured, what the heck… put it in the speech la)
2) Since my parents were not going to give a speech (stage fright ma… understandable la, I was too actually) – so have to thank those in attendance lo…
3) Next thing was to thank those that was personally involved in the whole wedding
4) Then for just a small surprise for my wife, I added a small note – and publicly declare my commitment to my wife :)
5) Of course the next course of action is to thank both my parent (this was the hardest part…. So much to put in, but so little time….) – and that’s why a proper speech should be prepared well in advance, else I think it would have gone on for more than an hour or worst, nothing to say at all….
So here’s the speech you’ve been waiting for….. have fun ah….
Thank you Kim, Kumaran and kin hon for the wonderful sharing
Good evening honored guest, respected family members, dearest friends and colleagues. I’ll try to keep my speech short so to let you all have your meals in peace. (coincidentally since tonight’s the FA cup finals between Man U and Chelsea and I know most are anxious to watch it but ive ask both morinho and ferguson not to score until the wedding is over)
So anyways, back to my speech – On behalf of my parents I would like to thank each and every one of you for the amount of effort you have made to be here to celebrate our marriage. We know many of you have traveled a long way to be here to celebrate with us so we hope that the night is enjoyable for you as it is special to us.
On a personal note I would especially like to thank both my new sister’s in law for the wonderful slide show she created for us and also my hengtai’s, waspakians that suffered to this mornings chimui’s torture, and to the chimui’s, thank you so much for the fun time we had. We of course would not want to leave out our CG group and cousins for helping out with the registrations & photography. Not forgetting my best man, Yi Jinn – you’ve been a great help to both joy and I over the pass few weeks, taking days off to be with us at our church wedding and been such a great support and help when times are needed (sorry u didn’t catch any fish last week though)
When I proposed to Joy, I put a lot of thought into what make a good marriage, the dictionary says that a marriage is the institution whereby men and woman are joined in a special kind of social and legal dependency for the purpose of founding and maintaining a family, if only things were that simple…. Then there is the other one where I guess we all already know which says a marriage consists of 3 rings, engagement ring, wedding ring and last but not least… the suffering, others say that its an alliance of 2 people one who never remembers birthdays and anniversaries and another who never forgets. I personally think marriage is devoting all your time and effort to make that one special person happy and indulging on the good times and being there for each other through the bad. Joy when I proposed to you I took it as a commitment, a commitment to making you happy and to do what I can (with Gods help) to be there for you in anyway I possibly can until were grey and old
Of course last but not least I would like to thank our parents. Both with different back grounds and yet so familiar in so many ways. Both Joy and I are just blessed to have such loving parents and siblings and also surrounded by most supportive and wonderful friends and I thank God for it. On a personal note, since I’m standing up here and probably the only time I would be able to look at both and my parents and say thank you for all that you have done for me. Even till today I’m still inconveniencing my parents with all my condo stuffs, wedding arrangements and worst still with my heavily sprained neck and shoulder muscle that kept me immobile almost whole of yesterday. My father MY HERO, who has always been there for me and to me my best supporter through out my growing years… and I can swear this to anyone I have the proudest father of his son, man with high integrity and greatest teacher any man could ever ask for. Stern father when he needs to be and both a loving father and husband to my mother. He leave’s a very big shoe for me to fill in. And of course my mother…. For as the saying goes, Behind every great man there's a great woman, and my mom has been the corner stone of our family that has kept us all together and most of all kept me in line. She’s always been there for me (my confidant), keeping me in check and always ALWAYS been there for me during my difficult times. If not for my sis and I, they would be living in their dream home, driving in their own Mercedes E class and my father fishing beside the stream next to their dream home- I don’t know how I’ll be able to thank both of them. I want to assure them they have left a lasting legacy and to be proud and happy for all they have achieved…. And I love both of you very very much….
So…. Not to keep you all waiting listening to me here bragging on and on (I know you’re all still hungry & anxious to watch the match), I thank you once again… so drink up, eat well and make merry… remember, please don’t drink and drive
Have a blessed week ahead and have a safe trip home.
Thank you
onwards to the next series!!!
Nibble nibble, taut taut, STRIKE! Fish On!!!
